A visit to the Missouri Department of Conservation's Peck Ranch area, where nearly three dozen elk have roamed the rugged hills and valleys since June, showed elk don't always hide during the day.
A tour for Division of Tourism employees and chamber of commerce members from Eminence, Van Buren and Ellington included a stop at pens where elk from Kentucky were kept before they were released.
"Guys, there's an elk down here," someone said in a loud whisper.
