This beautiful dog would have been facing an uncertain future if he hadn't had a microchip!

The other day, one of my neighbors came home with a beautiful and healthy looking dog he had found running loose along the Interstate just outside of town. The dog was very friendly and was wearing no collar, but was more than willing to get in his car for a ride. He brought the dog home and started asking some of us where we thought he should take him or how could he find the owner. The problem was that this beautiful dog looked like a American Pit Bull Terrier, and in this county that breed is banned. So most shelters would have him put down rather than even try to find a new home for it.
I suggested he take the dog to a vet and have him scanned for a microchip. Well, that's what he did and thankfully the dog did have one! The owner was called and they quickly picked up the dog. Turns out "Rocky" had slipped his collar earlier that morning because he didn't like being outside in the heat! I guess he was trying to get off his chain so he could get back inside where it was cool...
If this dog hadn't had a chip, his fate could have been much worse, unfortunately this breed of dog is restricted in our county and if found running loose he could be put down in a very short time. Especially since he didn't have his collar or any identification on him.
He and his owner were very lucky!

Kudos to my neighbor for having a harness and leash laying around and for saving this beautiful dog from certain death!

If you have a pet you value, you should protect that pet from getting lost in every way possible, including having a microchip implanted. It costs very little to have it done, and it's your pet's ticket home!
