Rottlady captures Bird Tongue?

I finally cleaned my windows so I could get some bird feeding pictures and it's amazing how much better the images turn out when you don't have to look through smudges.

I was surprised when I was able to capture these birds either with a mouth full of seed or as you see in the first image, a bird tongue! I did a little Google search this morning on the House Sparrow and found this per Wikipedia:

Sparrows are physically similar to other seed-eating birds, such as finches, but have a vestigial dorsal outer primary feather and an extra bone in the tongue.[2][3] This bone, the preglossale, helps stiffen the tongue when holding seeds.

I also found this description of a bird's tongue here:

Most birds have tongues, though unlike ours. A bird's tongue has 5 bones in it that support and strengthen it, together they are called the 'Hyoid apparatus'.

There is also a great deal of variation in bird tongues. A bird's tongue is generally harder and less flexible than ours. Most birds have a relatively simple tongue, a flat triangular blade in shape with a few backwardly pointing papillae at the back of the mouth which help to ensure food only goes in one direction.

Or maybe this one is just wagging it's tongue with a bunch of gossip? I only wish I could come up with some really good captions for these images. So, if you want to help out just post your captions below and help me out.

That's the best bird images I had so next I'll show you a couple of sunsets I caught while sitting on my front porch.

If you wait until the sun has gone below the horizon, sometimes you get a really colorful shot.

...while sitting on my front porch.

Lucky lucky lady! I have to drive quite some distance out of the woods to see the sun sets and sun rises. Such great photos, thank you for my morning colorama.

I do feel pretty lucky, the land to the west of me falls away in a slight slope so the sky seems to get bigger. Thanks for the kind complement.

Rottlady, that bird tongue photo is simply incredible! An outstanding capture!

Of course the rest are beautiful also, but the tongue really sticks out. *snicker*

Excellent photos rottlady!

It looks like one of the feeders actually attaches to the window, and you have several other feeders located near the window. Great idea! The barrier of the window allows the birds to feel safe yet they are close enough for you get really nice closeups.

That's right Mal, they seem to like the one on the door window, it's funny when they eat they throw seeds against the window making noise. I always know when they are there even if I've got my back turned.

Thanks Mal!

Rottlady, love the feeding bird photos, the bird tongue photo as well as the information is very interesting, the tongue almost looks like a third beak? But, those added photos of the sunset are just amazing, forget about feeding birds...give me a bowl of spicy salsa with some warm chips...and yea, might as well include a Cadillac Margarita on the side and move over...I am watching that sunset...hypnotized by the many colors...dip, crunch, crunch, sip, sip! So pretty!

Geez, rottlady, I begin to feel sorry for you. Here you are, the unofficial Newsvine sunset queen, plus you catch a very hard image to capture of a bird sticking out its tongue -- and you don't as many comments as the stink bug lady. POOR ROTTLADY!!! Seems ya gotta gross people out or something to get noticed....
