When I was out to see the Christmas parade last weekend, I also toured the square to capture some of the sites. The future History Museum had a display of old pictures  and then I captured some of the buildings there now. The old pictures weren't dated so I had to guess, but I thought they were interesting none the less. I titled this with "new" because they just finished remodeling the public areas of the square this fall. That's why all the trees you see are new. Too bad they didn't just work around the old one's, I hate to see them take out existing trees. Hopefully these will grow soon.

Quite an interesting tour of your city, rottlady -- both old and new! I love the girls outfits in the '60s picture. And the old Woolworth's sign on the sidewalk is very cool to see. :)

I hope so, but these days, they often plant trees that will never grow to be the size of the ones they cut down. Easier to manage, I guess.

Great pictures RL - isn't it a shame though how the downtowns have vanished? The square used to be where everything happened it seems.

It is a shame, they have been doing quite a bit with our downtown, there are lots of new small-business owners operated things like bistro's, boutiques and of course bars... But they still have to get the folks down there!

Thanks!

Springfield is small enough to maintain a down town and town square. It's good to see that they recognized that in time to make it something. Nice shots.

It's something to be concerned about if we want to keep our cities from being dull. I read in this book (fascinating read by the way) that urban planners shouldn't be designing cities around the car by moving pedestrians off the street and into sky-ways and shopping mall complexes. The assumption is that designing these things is better for all but when you pull everything from the street to make way for the car, you also strip away many of the things that give a city its distinct atmosphere and personality: pedestrians, window shops, street performers/artists, etc.

Consumers' preference for purchasing lots of cheap stuff at the national chain over spending more on less by supporting local commerce also affects a city's ability to maintain their vibrancy.

Excellent comment Ben, and I agree whole-heartedly. Our downtown has one way traffic around the square, but it also has a 2 or 3 story free parking garage not too far away.

They also sponsor a art walk every Friday down there where all the small shops do something special for the customer. The only thing we're lacking is an "anchor" store. But maybe that really isn't necessary. I don't know.

I was reading about the Lofts that are going to be built in the Square RL and they said there would be a restaurant on the bottom floor so maybe that will draw people into the area.

Wichita doesn't really have much in the way of downtown anymore. The courthouses are blocks away from where people gather at night. There are a few stores but they are on different ends of the City. It seems like everyone had a different idea here and went several directions instead of making a central area.

The lofts project has been started and stalled too many times to count. I do wish they would get it going, living in a loft down there would be really cool!

It sounds like it is going to cost the City a bunch of money - maybe they (the City) should just build them and be done with it. I've thought it would be nice to live in a loft too. We have a few downtown here - don't know much about them though.

The project was on target until the economy took a dive, hopefully that'll change in the coming years.

I am reminded of my Mother going Christmas shopping on the Springfield square. It was a good trip if she could find a parking space in the center of this square. In those days she would leave us sitting in the car..... today she would be arrested for that.

This is a cool idea, rottlady. I grew up in a small city with two long main streets, lined with victorian-era shops and restaurants. There were even a couple of movie theaters. When I was a kid, downtown was the place to be. Most of the stores went out of business when they built a mall, and when the super walmart moved in it pretty much finished off whatever was left. The stores that haven't been torn down are mostly vacant now. I guess we have to have progress, but I think the place would have done better to preserve at least some of its heritage. Hell, it's not even the same town anymore.

Well, now that I've hi-jacked your article to wax nostalgic for a moment I guess I'll be moving on... LOL. By the way, great pics. I like how you captured the little boy in mid-jump in photo seven.

I don't feel like you hijacked anything CT, but your right, the malls, and wally's did kill a lot of downtowns. It happened here as well. They keep trying to recover, hopefully they will.

As for that jumping boy, that was a lucky shot for sure!

Thanks for your comment.

I think these pics turned out great. It is so interesting to see the old pictures. The more things change the more they stay the same. I believe that the "uprooting excuse" in our little town had something to do with the root(s) getting too deep on the bigger trees and/or too big and they feared they would split the sidewalks. But they're nuts around here. Drop a cool mill on a new VFW, tear it down a year later and put in Tim Horton's.

I really like the kids on the turned off fountain too! Reminds of something somebody I know would do:)

Very cool article and photos! Great idea for towns and cities to renew their downtown areas, they offer us a link to our past; before the days of mass retailers and miles of malls. IMHO they can't compete with the quaintness of the down-towns...how they win is by price and convenience.

Thanks for sharing
