Girl's 'Notes Left Behind' Help Grieving Parents Help Others

advertisement

Though her parents didn't want her to know the severity of her cancer, they feel that she must have known what was happening. The tumor slowly took away her ability to talk.

But Elena was still able to write.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

After Elena passed away, her parents discovered that their daughter had left a message behind for them -- a lot of messages, actually."We started to pull out notes and they would be in between CDs or between books on our bookshelf," Keith Desserich said. Then the couple started finding them everywhere.

What a sweet thing she did for her family.

It is wonderful that this girl demonstrated such love during her illness!

And her family seems to be using the girl's messages to raise money to fight cancer, which is great, too.

It seems to me that she was wise beyond her years. Not everyone would think to do something like she did. And yes, it's nice the family decided to share it with the rest of us while helping a very needy cause. Thanks for you thoughtful comment James!

This is the type of story that needs to saturate the news headlines. Here's a little girl that thought of her family before herself, and a family that is thinking of other pediatric cancer patients by giving to them the profits of the book they put together about their findings instead of figuring out to "cash in" on the deal.

With all the bitterness, darkness, and morbidity of the news the nation, and the world these days, we all have a LOT that we can learn from this girl, this family, and this story.

There was a movie about a man that left his girlfriend (wife?) several communications she received/found after he passed away-helping her to get on with her life.

I'm glad the parent's still find her thoughts in unexpected places.

I'm in awe of how perceptive and full of love children are. May her soul rest in peace and may her family continue to enjoy Elena's notes.

What a touching story, rottlady. Many thanks for sharing this. Makes one wonder if perhaps, on some level, the little girl knew a lot more than anyone realized.

This story reminded me of something my vet said when she euthanized my ancient Samoyed. As she was preparing to put the needle in, she kept saying "God bless, you, Alex. You go now. Go to the light." I reminded her that he was deaf. She replied, "I know that. But I'm speaking to his soul."
