This was sent to me my email and I thought it was too good not to share.
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies'. Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey &Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven.
Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love,
God
It is not known who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service.
Great uplifting story Elizabeth. She got her answer and more!
A very sweet story indeed, and quite true because everyone knows *All Dogs Go To Heaven*.
And whoever wrote it, there hand may have been guided by God-so she did receive an answer from the right place.....
What a great person to write a letter back to that little girl, what do you there is still some good left in this world.
OK Rottlady... you made the LIST again!!!
(For those that don't know it's the LIST of those that write stories that make a 6'4 365 lb man with a GOATEE tear UP) *GRIN*
That was an AWESOME story... thanks!
you big sissy lol
(kidding!) :)
Her dog looks like my Lulu dog. Another dog that is certainly destined for heaven. Great story. :)
Wonderful story, rottlady! Thanks for sharing it!
Below is a link to an article that supports the authenticity of this story and tells a little more about the family involved.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story, now I'm crying all over again about my Zak...
Carol
"I'm sure he's somewhere with a smile in his soul."
Thank you for that beautiful thought.
great, big rottiegrins for such a great story! (*greatbigrottiepinkgrins*!)
Thanks for sharing such a great sweet story. Little girls are indeed sugar and spice and everything nice...and their dogs help them be that way!
I just lost a tear over here! That was just the sweetest thing I've read in the longest time, thank you so much for posting it. It is beautiful to see the work of God manifested in such a personal way. Whoever's heart was touched to respond is truly an angel!
I'm sure there are tears all over this virtual page..
Even us old tough guys shed a tear at this one. A very touching and uplifting story. Many thanks for sharing this piece.
Absolutely fantastically great story.
Dogs become part of our family and we are greatly saddened when they die. We need to remember the good times, look forward to a reunion.
Thanks for sharing.
Reading this story made my day.
Awww what a wonderful story! Thanks so much for sharing it here. Brought a bit of a smile and brightness into a really gray and icky day!
I'm glad to know that the sun is shining on someone somewhere today :-} We've got an early storm moving in and temps have dropped since morning and the sun has abandoned us it seems...
wow. that made me cry. what a wonderful person that took it upon themselves to help this little girl.
Made me boo hoo too. I don't dare let my husband read that, I'd have to call 911. In fact, I wish I'd known about Mr. Rogers' book when his ancient Lab died.
we lost our great dane last year. boy was that painful.
Growing up we had a great dane in the neighborhood. He was the biggest kid of all. :)
daisy jane, the new one likes to lay in your lap. she is so sweet, but at 140 lbs., she seems to need a big lap.
Tricky Mona,
that is soooo funny! Your comment about your hubby and his ancient lab and how you wished he would have had Mr. Rogers book...I have been laughing my head off over that one, LOL!
Beautiful story. The love between a child and a dog, two of the most nonjudgemental beings on this earth, is something special to see. I know that, with this little girl's capacity to love another kind of g-d's creatures, someday there will be another Abbie in her life.
rottlady--Thank you very much for the story it was awesome and heart warming.
It takes a lot of stamps to get it all the way to heaven.... hahaha... delightful!
rottlady-
Thank you, and I'm extremely glad that I work in an office rarely frequented by people as I seem to have gotten something in my eye reading this!
XXOO to Meredith and the lovely person at the USPS!
OOPS!
Newsvine said that my comment couldn't be posted! "An error had occurred" Oh well, guess it could!
rottlady,
A delightful story... about three wonderful people... and, no doubt, a wonderful dog...
Your article reminded me of something I recently got in an email...
Why dogs don't have to live so long...
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little six-year-old boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed s o calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him.
What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life--like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
-When loved ones come home,
always run to greet them.
-Never pass up the opportunity
to go for a joyride.
-Allow the experience of fresh air and
the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
-Take naps.
-Stretch before rising.
-Run, romp, and play daily.
-Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
-Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
-On warm days, stop to lie on your back
on the grass.
-On hot days, drink lots of water
and lie down under a shady tree.
-When you're happy, dance around
and wag your entire body.
-Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
-Be loyal.
-Never pretend to be something you're not.
-If what you want lies buried,
dig until you find it.
-When someone is having a bad day,
be silent, sit c lose by and nuzzle them gently.
ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!
Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away.
Thank you for the wonderful story, Rottlady. I have had several special furry friends cross the rainbow bridge. They all brought something special to my life, enrichening it in such simple but important ways. Dogs are nothing but big furry bags of love, who expect so little and yet give so much. I miss all of my doggie friends who have passed on.
You had me at the title! A beautiful story.
Such a beautiful story. What a blessing a complete stranger gave this family such an amazing gift of peace, hope and compassion.
I recently received this email myself and was greatly touched by it. What a beautiful gift that some kind soul gave her.
You are welcome. It was a great idea to post it. (Wish I had thought of it. LOL)
Not to compare my aunt to a dog, but.
May aunt passed a few days before Christmas (a big holiday for my father's family), it was unexpected, she caught an infection and it went straight to her brain, the doctors didn't catch it in time because it presented as a stroke.
When we explained it to our nephew (he was six at the time) he simply shrugged and told us "Jesus must have invited her to his birthday party".
sweet story.....
I would not want to go to Heaven if pets did not go.
Hey, I'm an atheist, and it made ME cry. Great story.
Hey, I'm an atheist, and it made ME cry.
That make two of us. Very touching.
You ready for winter down there?
I gotta drive from North KC to Raytown (South KC) for work. Not lookin' forward to it ;-(
A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read "Puppies For Sale." Signs like that have a way of attracting small children, and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner’s sign. "How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked.
The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50."
The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have $2.37," he said. "Can I please look at them?"
The store owner smiled and whistled and out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his store followed by five teeny tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging considerable behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging limping puppy and said, "What’s wrong with that little dog?"
The store owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited. "That’s the little puppy that I want to buy."
The store owner said, "No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger and said, "I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.
The store owner countered, "You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to jump and play with you like the other puppies."
To this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner and softly replied, "Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!"
Okay, that one really, really got to me. Children and dogs are God's blessings to us.
Dang!! That thing is back in my eye!!
