Big mama! Rottweiler nurses abandoned kittens

advertisement

Ten-month-old Jazzy, who has never had a litter of her own, recently adopted three infant kittens and has begun nursing them. Jazzy's owner, Ashley Hood of Bramber, was shocked. "I would never have thought that was possible," she said.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The kittens are healthy and continue to grow thanks to their adoptive canine mom. Hood has found a good home for the two female kittens and plans to keep the male.

What a great dog!

Hood estimates it took about two days for Jazzy's milk to come in and says the kittens’ constant suckling did the trick. “It's really, really cool. I just can't believe it.”

This is wonderful (and almost unbelievable)!

Thanks rottlady for a good news seed on a Thursday.

Hate to be a buzz kill but....am I the only one who thinks about the mental health of these animals? I mean, I'm for racial diversity as much as the next guy, but this is kind of ridiculous.

@Adrian, these kitties only know that their adopted mom is feeding and caring for them, and who knows, when they grow up maybe they will try to chase the mailman....*smiles*

Wasn't there a seed a while back about the postal service threatening to stop delivers due to a kitten? Wonder if that one had a 'doggy' mom too?

@ Adrian: Jazzy probably thinks that her babies are a little strange looking... but it's not their fault!!! They were BORN looking like that! They're her BABIES and that's all that counts... they're also not growing as fast as they should... HMMMM It's OK though... cause they're HER babies! *GRIN*

I remember one of my sister's dogs insisting that she wanted to see "THOSE BABIES" that my sister had in a box on her table!!! I was about 6 and the dog was a black lab... the babies were some raccoon kits she had found in the woods behind her mother-in-law's house! She finally gave in and showed the lab the three babies... and the lab LAID DOWN... she took one of the kits and put it close to her... and the lab kept looking at her until she put all three near her... she curled protectively around them and a couple days later had even started lactating!!! Babies nursed until they were big enough and then were able to get on solid food! Mammals don't tend to care WHAT the baby looks like... if it's a BABY it's a BABY!!! *GRIN*

I raised two kittens that nursed on my dog, though we were feeding them kitten formula and the dog was fixed, and they were fine. This is much better than just bottle feeding them, they really need the nursing part as much as the milk, its a bonding thing that they need. Like human babies, they need the cuddling and attention and they're not really prejudiced about who are what's doing the cuddling. Jazzy is a good girl, her people should be proud.

Get over yourself... the kittens are alive and well because of the Rotti, not sick and dieing. You've got a nerve. As humans we would do the same for someone else's baby if that's what it took. We are all mammels.

When I was about 4 we had a cat that died about 2 weeks after having a litter of kittens. Our English setter, who had never had a litter, adopted them and was able to nurse them. It's good to see there's finally another such incident to point out to people who don't believe that such things can happen.

Now all I need is another story about someone's lab getting knocked up by a dachshund...

Jazzy woke up this morning very ill. They have taken her to the vet and she is anemic, she could possibly have a kidney disease we are all waiting for more news from the vet but it is not looking good due to financial circumstances. Wondering what we can do to raise money to help save poor Jazzy.. Any ideas?

i'm so sorry to hear about Jazzy being ill. My prayers are with her and her owners. Good luck and please keep us informed on how she is doing.

Michelle, are you part of the family? I noticed that you have the same last name as Ashley mentioned in the article. If their is possibly a fund started through the vet so it can be verified folks might help out.

I love stories like this. She is a great dog.

My Rott/Sharpia mix (before he past away last August) used to find kittens and would keep everyone away except me or my wife. He did the same thing to some baby squirrels and a baby Blue Jay he found after a sever storm. Brought them to me and never hurt them.

This is just so sad, Jazzy died on July 16th of acute kidney failure. So I guess the comment made by Michelle Hood above was correct. My thougths and prayers are with the family.

The kittens have since been weaned and it’s unclear if Jazzy’s role would have augmented any pre-existing condition she may have had, although Hood said she showed symptoms of dehydration the day she fell ill.

In many ways Jazzy had been hailed as a hero to the three little kittens in need of the warmth only a mother can give.

“She was an amazingly sweet and gentle dog. We will miss her so much.” The message Jazzy’s life has served, she said, is this: “Jazzy was here for a very short time, too short, but it was long enough to prove that Rottweilers are kind and loving dogs.”

The Hood family asks that any donations in Jazzy’s name be made either to the SPCA or Avon Animal Hospital in Windsor.

The article Goodbye, Jazzy is where I got the info from.
